American Silver Eagle Coins
The American Silver Eagle is the silver bullion coin of the United States. It has been issued since 1986 and contains one ounce of silver. Coins are minted to exacting specifications and are guaranteed by the US Government for weight, content, and purity. The series has become a favorite of both bullion investors and coin collectors.
The US Mint has offered Silver Eagles in three primary versions. The first is the regular uncirculated bullion version of the coin which is available from coin dealers or authorized bullion dealers. The second is the collectible proof version available directly from the US Mint. The final and most recent version is a collected uncirculated version of the coin also know as the Burnished Silver Eagle. These coins carry the “W” mint mark and are struck on burnished blanks.
Many collectors consider the coin to be the “modern Silver Dollar” and collect the series by date. There are two primary key dates. The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle was included only in the 1995 Gold Eagle Proof Sets, as a result the mintage was only 30,125 coins. The 2006-W Reverse Proof Silver Eagle was included only in the 2006 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set, which was limited to 250,000 sets.
Recently, an exciting new variety coin was discovered. This is the 2008-W Silver Eagle with the Reverse of 2007. These 2008 coins were struck with the reverse die type of 2007. The variety is most commonly distinguished by the bowl shaped “U” of “United States” on the reverse of the coin.
